![]() **Disclaimer: This post is based on my own personal interpretation as an elementary school teacher. I am not, nor have I ever been affiliated with Engage NY or Eureka Math. Engage NY/Eureka math is a rigorous math curriculum aligned to the common core standards. The curriculum is well thought out and provides excellent guidance to ensure teachers understand what they need to do during each lesson. The modules are extremely detailed; in fact, there is so much good stuff in there that no one has time to read it all. So, my New Year’s resolution is to read the manuals and share what I’ve learned. In the Understanding Engage NY Series, I’m going to break down the various components of the Engage NY math curriculum into quick, easy to read pieces. I’ll review kindergarten through fourth grade. Today, we’ll start with a very general overview of 4th grade and in the next few posts, I’ll dive into specifics of each part of an Engage NY math lesson. According to the teacher’s manual, by the end of the year, 4th grade students should:
In 4th grade, students continue to work with whole numbers and use tens and hundreds to understand thousands using the pattern of times ten on the place value chart. Students practice solving multi-step word problems involving addition and subtraction modeled with tape diagrams that focus on numerical relationships. The (de)composition strategies students practiced in 2nd and 3rd grades are used as a scaffold as students explore the concept of multiplicative comparison (1 thousand is 10 times as much as 1 hundred). See the chart below: Because there was so much information in these lessons, I created PowerPoint presentations to help guide the lessons. They're available on my TpT store and can be purchased to suit your specific needs: choose from Single Lesson, Topic, Module and Entire Year.
